The Greatest Opposition To Change
By Kaley Thompson
When we want to create big change in our lives, our greatest opposition isn’t the good we want to do. It isn’t the healthy habit it want to form. And it isn’t the love we want to bring into our relationships. Our greatest opposition to change is our past.
When we’re moving into an unknown future, we tend to dwell on the past and either glorify it or shame ourselves for it. We think we were better off in the good ol’ days or that we’re not good enough to deserve to have our best days ahead of us. So, instead of changing, we go back to our old selves because it’s easier to be who we’ve become then become who God meant for us to be.
Socrates once said, “The secret to change is to focus all of your energy, not in fighting the old, but on building the new.”
If we want to truly change, we have to stop fighting our old self and start focusing on our new life (2 Corinthians 5:17.) We have to remind ourselves who God wants us to be rather than who we used to be. And we have to stop looking backward because we’re not going that way. We’re going forward, we’re doing a new thing, and we’re free because that’s who God created us to be.
